Lectures and Seminars

Frank Musumeci, R.P.T / S.T.S / C.P.T.

BIOMECHANICAL AND MUSCULOSKELETAL DIRECTOR, PRITIKIN LONGEVITY CENTER + SPA
“I found Mr. Musumeci to be a charismatic speaker because he has lived his topic. His power point presentation contained substance and style and the audience was engaged every minute. Using personal examples from his vast experience and expressing himself with animation, movement, and humor, the audience was compelled to listen and react favorably. Mr. Musumeci has an urgency to communicate and a sincere desire to teach people how to prevent themselves from injury. His message sang to me because I believe in preventative medicine and would like to see Physical Therapy counteract pre conditions to surgery.”

Lower Back Pain Lecture

By Frank Musumeci
This lecture will explain why it is actually important to do appropriate targeted exercises to minimize common injuries from these sports specific activities. As we age, individuals are vulnerable for common orthopedic injuries. Therefore, when choosing exercises, the individual may want to choose exercises that will prolong their joints and spine's longevity. Often it is not always appropriate for every individual to do the exact same exercise because we all tend to have different individual structural contributions and past orthopedic injuries/histories.

This lecture will review common lower back pathologies as well as ways to manage these particularly with proper exercise choices. Additionally, adjunctive therapies for low back and neck pain such as physical therapy services can often be helpful at managing these complaints and will be summarized and introduced. A discussion will include the importance of proper lower extremity flexibility and core stabilization exercises. Often, a common source of lower back and neck pain as well as scoliosis can actually be caused by a leg length discrepancy which frequently goes undiagnosed through out one's lifetime. Addressing this potential problem, can often be easily remedied when recognized. Being cognitively aware of common aging principles of the spine is the first step at managing and preventing pain, which often leads to unnecessary surgeries and medications. Just like we purposely eat appropriate foods, for good cardiovascular health, we can also employ appropriate exercise options to promote good spinal health as well.

Common Causes, and Structural Reasons for Foot and Knee Pain and Exercise Considerations

By Frank Musumeci
Frank teaches on common structural foot alignments and how these can influence knee and hip injuries and degenerative changes. He describes hypo mobile and hyper mobile physiques and appropriate exercise choices based on these physiques. Frank discusses commonly overlooked remedies in place of surgical intervention for pathologies such as plantar fascitis, heel spurs, hallux valgus deformities (bunions), metatasalgia and posterior tibial tendon insufficiency. He suggests appropriate shoe wear and/or orthotics that can stress shield the vulnerable joints. Appropriate shoes/orthotics can help to manage and prevent chronic pain which often leads to surgery.

Frank also demonstrates how the strength of the ankles and toes influences one's balance. Fall risk factors in the elderly increases due to the loss of reflexes and coordination. It also increases with age and sensory loss (often associated with diabetic neuropathy). More than 90% of hip fractures occur in person's over 70 years of age and of those who sustain a hip fracture one forth die within 6 months, according to the "American Family Physician", April 2000. Therefore, Frank strongly recommends appropriate exercises and neuromuscular training always be incorporated in one's exercise routine especially for the Senior and Baby Boomer generation.

Common Injuries of Shoulders and Knees and Exercise Considerations

By Frank Musumeci
During this lecture Frank reviews common shoulder pathologies, such as impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tears/repairs and bursitis. He also outlines and covers various common knee pathologies, specifically patellofemoral syndrome, meniscal injuries and degenerative osteoarthritis. He demonstrates common aging principles and how the wrong exercise choices and activities can actually exacerbate these conditions, leading to common procedures such as rotator cuff, arthroscopic knee and total knee replacement surgery. Frank touches on alternative adjunctive therapies to help manage and treat these common problems, while also improving the longevity of the joints.

Frank describes how common exercise fads actually can worsen and even create joint problems. His expertise in the fitness and rehabilitation field allows him to give unique insight. His goal and passion is to educate individual's on better exercise options that will improve the longevity of existing protective cartilage, warding off the need for common joint replacement procedures. He discusses preventative concepts that can be employed in the exercise realm, especially for older individuals who participate in higher risk sports such as, tennis and golf. Frank believes that we should actually "train" appropriately for sport participation as we get older. By training more sports specific, the individual should be better able to prevent common injuries and surgeries.
